The European Union and South Korea have fostered a significant strategic alliance since the establishment of their partnership in 2010, characterized by a multitude of pivotal agreements across economic, political, and security sectors. As the sole nation to have entered into such extensive agreements with the EU, South Korea has solidified its status as one of the EU's most vital global partners. The future of the strategic partnership between the EU and Korea appears increasingly promising. Both parties have demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing collaboration on economic security, capitalizing on their aligned strategies and mutual interests in navigating complex geopolitical landscapes. Our guest speaker, Jae-Seung Lee, Professor at Korea University will explain the contemporary challenges of this relationship and delve into energy security, trade, and the prospects of the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Jae-Seung Lee is a professor at Korea University and the Jean Monnet professor at the College & Graduate School of International Studies (CIS & GSIS). He was also the former dean of GSIS & DIS. Currently, he serves as the director of the Jean Monnet EU Centre of Excellence and the North Benelux Centre. As a professor well-versed in international political economy, he has authored numerous books and articles on the international relations of Korea, East Asia, and Europe. His current research focuses on regional cooperation, energy security, and European affairs. In 2023, he was the president of the Korean Society for Contemporary European Studies and a board member of the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies. Professor Lee earned his degree in political science from Seoul National University and his Ph.D. from Yale University. Recently, he was appointed as a fellow at Johns Hopkins University SAIS. Professor Lee has regularly written opinion pieces for major Korean newspapers and has provided commentary on international affairs to various media outlets.
