Balázs Pálvölgyi

Lawyer (ELTE, 1997), historian (ELTE, 2005), PhD from ELTE Faculty of Law in 2007. Since 2000, he has been teaching legal history at the Széchenyi István University, and in 2015-2016 he also taught at the National University of Public Service. He has been awarded several scholarships for research in Vienna and has participated in research projects.

In addition to her academic work, she worked at the National Communications Authority from 2007-2010, at the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice from 2010-2011, at the Pest County Government Office from 2012-2016, and at the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Paris from 2016-2021.

The course presents the evolution of Hungarian migration processes, their historical background and governmental responses to the phenomenon of migration, the steps taken to influence migration processes, the intersection of intentions, ideologies and opportunities.

Memory of Tastes – French History – French Cheese

The history of many French cheeses is linked to the history of the country. The cultural and public history of a particular historical period is illustrated by a typical cheese. The cheeses linked to each theme will be tasted. Invited speakers also took part in the course.

Epidemics and the creation of the modern public health system in Hungary (1867-1914)

The Hungarian migrant community’s thirty-year-development in the US shows how the most important stages evolved, appeared, became a diaspora and the trend towards assimilation. Seeing the strong activity of Budapest in the issue, this diasporic cycle’s stages and periods clearly reflected in the governmental aims and measures.

The Hungarian government was aware of the problem of emigration as early as the 1870s. As the involvement of agents in the increase of emigration seemed obvious, the government chose the easier way: in the first decrees it targeted this activity From the 1890s onwards, the policy changed: a much more comprehensive approach was adopted. Since the turn of the century, all governments have sought to find a form of regulation that is acceptable to all, so as to slow down or at least control emigration. Despite all governmental efforts, mass Hungarian emigration was only halted by the end of the world war and then by the end of immigration opportunities in the US, the quota system.
