Dr. William Wood is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Pardubice in the Czech Republic and Principal Investigator of the research grant “Placing Nietzsche’s First Philosophy into a New Perspective” from the Czech Science Foundation (GACR). He has a B.A. in Philosophy and Theology from the University of Oxford (2004), a M.A. in Philosophy from Leiden University (2005) and a Ph.D. from the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago (2021). He is the author of several articles on topics in modern European philosophy, including Nietzsche, Leo Strauss and the question of secularization and religious identity. While in Budapest, he is working on a monograph, Nietzsche’s Strange Epicureanism: A Modern Philosopher Transforms an Ancient Tradition, which reads Nietzsche as a heterodox, late modern member of the ancient Epicurean school. He is also involved in organizational activities for the European Center of Political Philosophy, of which he is a co-founder. The Center is a new research and teaching initiative housed at the MCC, whose mission is to bring political philosophy back to Europe from its “exile” in the United States.
